I have no “significant other”. Everyone I’ve ever met, kissed, loved, hated or spoken to has been significant because neither of us have encountered another species to exchange or compare existence with outside of our world.
As far as we can see, we currently are the only ones around, so each one of us on this planet is a mighty significant compliment to the universe, due to our ability to actually contemplate its incredible vastness, variety & unmatched complexity.
And what a privilege it is to not only understand this, but to perfect our ability & our tools which equip our species to not only communicate with & study the universe, but to set sail for another world entirely.
But in the meantime, above all else, we must learn what it truly means to love. Only then can we all be proud as a species to be much more than an accidental significance; instead, we all would respect our small corner window of the universe, venture out into the cosmos, represent this galaxy & speak for the Earth.

sagan|senseEDIT: since I wrote this a year or two ago, I have most definitely acquired a pretty definitive “significant someone”. Science, just as in life, is a constant process of correction & adaptation.
